Primal Forms - Spherical Geometry

Formed from the movement of spirals, waves and orbits, their interactions and intersections. Matter evolving from elementary forces, the mathematics of creation, the construction of nature. The action of movement on equilibrium, changing it with energy to be expressed. Universal motion, waves ripple, clouds swirl. Flow moves in a multitude of ways, making a myriad of forms.

Primal forms are a series of hand carved geometric spheres. This spherical geometry centres on the regular solids, which are the fundamental building blocks of natural form. The design is drawn on the smooth surface of the sphere. The three-dimensional process begins by carving the design, which is further developed until the form becomes fully three-dimensional. The final stages achieved after firing the ceramic forms enable subtle geometric features to be seen. The designs are built around fundamental points relating to the geometry of the form. Spirals, orbits and waves are the main elements which evolve in and around the essential geometry, resulting in a variety of intersections, alignments and geometric configurations. The examples here are a selection of the many forms created in recent years. This began at at an early age living around the sacred geometry associated with cathedral architecture. Examples here show the early formative stages as well as the processes that contribute to the making of the forms. The term primal describes the basic simplicity of the designs. It's almost as if something fundamental is being uncovered, something that already exists is there to be discovered and brought to life.

An insight into the crafting processes of the forms. Beginning with incising the geometric design on the smooth sphere, through initial cutting, to the final honing and 'tuning' of the fired ceramic form.

Early examples are in a variety of materials including carved wood as well as other natural and composite materials.

Primal forms are seen as possible encapsulations of time. Rolling marks out their pattern as a timeline with the potential of being multi-directional.
